Angel Aquino is no stranger to the limelight. She has always been a favorite cover girl of various magazines. Starting out as a model, she later became a successful film actress and lifestyle television host. Angel is now a Greenpeace Ocean Defender.
Last July 19, 2006, the gala premiere of “Donsol” was held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). It is one of the entries at the 2nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival where Angel played a lead role. Donsol’s theme is learning to love again despite the possibility of another heartbreak. In this film, Angel and lead actor Sid Lucero starred as two strangers who were troubled by past heartaches. Eventually, they found themselves drawn to each other as they let love surface anew. Thus the tagline, “love is an ocean of emotions.”
Donsol, unlike other movies taking on the names of places as the film titles, didn’t come off as a quasi-tourist advertisement. This movie vividly shows the beauty and struggles of the sea and whale sharks. Nevertheless, Angel was not swallowed up by the picturesque shots in the film, and even won the best actress award for her nuanced and convincing portrayal of a breast cancer survivor. That only proved she already mastered unglamorous roles notwithstanding her swanky model looks.
Another thing that would make Angel swoon-worthy is that she has a heart for the oceans. It is remarkable for someone who lives a busy modern lifestyle to stay grounded and still have time to care and promote solutions for the oceans that are continuously being polluted. Angel is now one of Greenpeace’s Ocean Defenders.
The Donsol movie screenings held at the CCP gave Angel a chance to talk and let the public know how they can take action in saving our abused oceans which can be as simple as signing up as an Ocean Defender. Angel’s love for and dedication to her work reflects her earnest support to save the seas. That’s why together with Greenpeace, she aims to make a difference for the oceans. Truly, this Filipina is not just an angel by name but in heart, too.
